Sailing along the British Virgin Islands

wonderful adventure to discover the most beautiful islands of the Caribbean; places that seem to come from exciting books or from picturesque and romantic postcards from the time of the settlers or pirates

Once a refuge for buccaneers and brigands, the British Virgin Islands, now attract crews of different sailors, drawn by constant trade winds, well-protected anchorages and a mild climate all year round. Fortunately, tourism development has been limited by a strongly environmental policy! Here you will find wide white beaches, crystal clear waters, alternating reggae rhythms mixed with old British classics and lots of good rum!

Road Town (BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS)

The constant breath of the trade winds caresses a channel dotted with islands, lapped by weak currents and hundreds of protected bays.

During his second trip to the Caribbean, Christopher Columbus was led by Caribbean in an archipelago of pristine islands that he called "Santa Ursula y las once mil virgenes", in honor of a 4th century princess who was raped and killed by the Huns. Santa Ursula even today it remains an important symbol that is even represented in the local flag.

If you approach the British Virgin Islands from the sea, considering the purity of nature, it is not difficult to imagine what might have passed through Christopher Columbus's head in 1493 when he named this pristine group of about 100 islands with the name: Sant'Ursula and its 11,000 virgins ...

One hundred years later, the English pirates Sir Francis Drake and Jack Hawkins they began to use these islands as a base during their attacks on Spanish ships.

Then came the French corsairs and the Dutch filibusters, it was known that these islands possessed some of the safest and most unguarded ports in the West Indies. Eventually, many locations became known as pirate lairs.

I was quite disappointed with Road Town , the capital, which has very little to offer the curious visitor.

Strolling through the center we saw the walls of HM Prison, the 18th century prison, a veritable fortress used as a prison where it often happens to hear voices and music from prisoners' cells listening to the radio at night.

What a strange place these British Virgin Islands, a British colony but which of british has nothing! You drive on the left, you use the American dollar, there are all the most famous stars and stripes franchises ... ah no ... they have the Union Jack as a flag, sorry!

So, if you want to spend a pleasant day on this island, we suggest you go to Cane Garden Bay, the center of Tortola. Spend the day at this northwestern beach swimming in turquoise water, renting a boat or kayak, snorkeling and enjoying great food. Then, when the sun sets, the town wakes up and the live music of the various cafes or bars like Quito’s Gazebo, Elm and Myett’s - will accompany you all night long!

We are ready to sail! we continue to the vault of the magnificent St Maarten!
