Before Christopher Columbus sighted her during her second voyage in 1493, and assigned her name in honor of the Madonna of Guadalupe, venerated in Extremadura, the Caribians who lived there called her "Karukera", or "the island of beautiful waters" . Yes, because despite being very varied in landscape terms, it is above all its postcard beaches that bring thousands of tourists to Guadeloupe every year.
And so here we are at the discovery of this wonderful Caribbean paradise.
We dock in Pointe-à-Pitre.
An archipelago in the heart of the Antilles, 5 islands between the islands, each characteristic for its nature, for its beaches and for its history.
Guadeloupe is made up of two main islands, Grande Terre and Basse Terre, connected by a bridge, and the smaller Les Saintes, Marie Galante and Désirade.
Guadeloupe is a French region, therefore Europe in all respects: you pay in Euros, health security - essential for spending a peaceful holiday abroad and especially in the tropics - is guaranteed. It is a safe area, it lends itself to be visited in complete tranquility, even with children of all ages.
The main island, which also takes the name of Guadalupe, is divided into two parts, Basse-Terre and Grande-Terre, separated from each other by a lagoon, the so-called Rivière Salée; for their particular shape, Guadalupe is known as "the butterfly island".
The Overseas Region then includes Marie-Galante; La Désirade and other smaller islands.
Here you will have the opportunity to experience a holiday full of nature, tradition, beauty: beaches, rainforests, a still active volcano, the coral reef, two nature reserves and small islands that make the archipelago a destination of a thousand shades and colors.
The first stop must be the colorful city market. Wherever we go, we absolutely must go to the local market, only in places of this kind can you understand and know more deeply the place you are exploring. See its people in their daily lives and this too becomes a journey within a journey!
We decide to reach the picturesque beach of Le Gosier!
We cross the colorful fruit market, then the one rich in spices and finally the picturesque one of the fish, with the fishermen cleaning the various tropical fish just caught.
By bus we reach Le Gosier and stop at La Datcha, the local beach: excellent choice for those who want to spend a few hours in total relaxation in a place not far from Pointe-à-Pitre.
We are the only tourists and we relax all day with our little ones!
They trample on the shoreline with microscopic feet and with that transparent water that occasionally bathes them, surprising them every time.
The sea is beautiful, many nice pelicans that fly awkwardly, at the water's edge, every now and then they dive to catch some fish.
We envy the locals or the French who live here and who perhaps, for a break of an hour from work, reach this paradise on earth!
We return to the city but the center of Point-a-Pitre is rather disappointing: a maze of chaotic alleys where only chinoiserie and chic stuff are sold!
Recall that Guadaloupe is an archipelago made up of 5 very different islands and for this reason, their discovery becomes very interesting!
Let's discover them out together!
Basse-Terre. Wild nature, beautiful beaches, many proposals for sporting activities between sea, mountains and waterways. Nice dives. Numerous places to visit, both historical and natural. Very characteristic is Deshaies, a very pleasant fishing village with its seaside restaurants.
Grande-Terre. Long beautiful clear beaches and turquoise colored lagoons protected by coral reefs. Large fields of sugar cane despite the modernization is well present in Grande-Terre around Pointe à Pitre. Here there are numerous restaurants and the nightlife is the most lively especially in the areas of Gosier, Sainte Anne and St. François.
Les Saintes is often a destination for day trips for the beauty of its bay (it is considered the third most beautiful bay in the world) and for its proximity to Basse-Terre.
In fact, it would deserve a few days' stop to experience a unique reality up close, linked to the history of the island and that of its population remained isolated from Guadeloupe until a few decades ago.
Some historical site to visit. The beaches are not exceptional but the waters are simply transparent with some of the most beautiful seabed; it is an excellent destination for diving enthusiasts.
La Desirade, the island with the most original history, offers a very peaceful atmosphere offering tourists an oasis of peace, some beautiful beaches with a restaurant, some historical places to visit and pleasant walks to do at sunset. It is ideal for resting and experiencing the rhythms of fishing.
Finally, Marie-Galante remains: an island stopped in time and tied to the rhythms of agriculture, a few villages overlooking the sea and a nature turned to the cultivation of sugar cane with postcard beaches almost deserted, the most beautiful in the archipelago.

Sono stata a Martinique e mi e’ piaciuta tantissimo, virtue andare anche a Guadalupe, vi chiedo gentilmente se avete consigli sugli alloggi. Grazie. Ora restiamo in casa, ma torneremo a viaggiare.
Ciao Angela, Martinica è molto carina come isola e ricca di attività, io la assimilo molto a Guadeloupe, sarà perchè entrambe pezzi di Francia ai caraibi, non so… sai che ci sono dei charter che collegano Guadeloupe direttamente con l’Italia? Questa potrebbe essere una buona dritta quando si organizza un viaggio in quelle zone ma, cercando di rispondere alla tua domanda, ti dico che noi, quando viaggiamo, cerchiamo di prediligere le sistemazioni locali stando alla larga dai grandi alberghi occidentali. In questo modo vivi più da vicino la realtà di un luogo.
